C A Guide for the Disabled Traveler: The United States, Canada & Europe, Barish, Frances, Frommer/Pasmantier Publishers, 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York 10020, 1984, $10.95. Written by round-the-world wheelchair traveler, this guide covers 15 major cities in the U.S., Canada and Europe, including New York, Boston, New Orleans, London, Paris, and Vienna. It cites specifics about transportation in these cities. Also: entrances, ramps, elevators, door widths to bathrooms and restrooms in individual hotels, restaurants, theatres, night spots, museums and tourist sites. While a range of prices is given, prices can change. The author prefers do-it-yourself travel over packaged group tours. This usually means phoning hotels well in advance to determine such important details as whether the room doors are wide enough for a wheelchair, if the bathroom arrangement is satisfactory and if one can get to the dining room, swimming pool and beach without encountering a flight of steps. Has, at times, asked a hotel manager over the phone to go measure a doorway to make sure a wheelchair can get through it

C Access to the World: A Travel Guide for the Handicapped, Weiss, Louise, Facts on File, 460 Park Avenue South, New York, New York 10016, 1983, 221 pp., $14.95. For those in wheelchairs (either temporarily or permanently); for those whose ability to talk has been impaired by neurological, cardiac or pulmonary disease; for those who have lost their sight, are aging or have any other condition that restricts mobility. Written in large type. Discusses various modes of transportation: airline, bus, train and boat. Services are named specifically; which companies own the accessible 767's to the names of trains with wide passageways. Many services are listed in checklist form by company name. Later sections move on to the matter of specific destinations, first within the U.S. and later worldwide. Lists many other resources to examine for more detailed information on a given destination. Contains specific descriptions of hotel rooms in various chains. And, for those reluctant to travel alone, a number of tourist guide agencies and travel clubs are described. This book also tells how to make travel arrangements, how to find out about special tours, what to take with you, what to do when you get there, and it provides important health and travel tips as well.
