Will give information on accessibility of trains and stations and assistance. Amtrak now has special cars for disabled passengers. Many trains have areas where the disabled can sit in wheelchairs. Some have special seats in the dining cars and accessible sleeping cars and restrooms. Amtrak personnel get special training in assisting disabled passengers. Senior citizens, blind and disabled travelers receive a 25-percent discount on Amtrak tickets by presenting an identification card ($5.00, one time cost) from the American Foundation for the Blind, 15 West 16th Street, New York, New York 10011. (212) 620-2000, or other local state or federal government agency. A letter from a physician certifying that the passenger has an impairment which limits his ability to use Amtrak services is also acceptable. Disabled children ages 2-11 pay only 3/4 of the full adult fare There's also a special Amtrak reservations system available to deaf travelers who have access to a teletype machine. Amtrak publishes a guidebook called Access Amtrak explaining services for disabled and elderly travelers.
